Matt Nathanson and Matt Fish are a ginormous amount of fun.
Tonight, Maya, Matt, Iris, Adam and I travelled to Slims in SF for the Matt Nathanson(& Fish) gig. We got our tickets and claimed a spot infront of the stage. Then Iris and I checked out the merch booth (the new tshirts are awesome, methinks my fave is the brown one with the firecracker on it) and decided to walk downstairs to the bathroom and coat check area. Down there, we found a door marked “emergency exit” and tried to listen to the other side of it. We heard Matt (assuming it was he and not the opening act, David Hopkins) strumming away on his guitar. GIDDYNESS ensued. We stood there awhile longer, showing intent interest in the framed flyers for Slim’s past performances. They were actually interesting, because some of them were very odd drawings. We decided to head back upstairs and planned to try again closer to Matt’s set.
This idea fizzled.
Why? Cause we had to plant our feet in our spots infront of the stage for fear that people would scoot us out of the way. Being shorter than everyone else there (or at least those around me) it was kind of hard to get a super-great spot (but I managed, and ended up standing directly infront of the mic).
The opening act, David Hopkins, was ok. Not 100% my cup of tea, but not horrible either. Honestly I just don’t think that he blended well with the crowd. There had to be a good 90% Matt Nathanson/Fish fans in the audience. We are expecting upbeat and rockin’ out music. But Hopkins music was mostly slow ballads. I suppose his set really did help juice up the crowd. We were insanely happy to see Matt & Matt grace the stage (not that we wouldn’t have been .. but I’m assuming you know what I mean.)
Rock rock rock.. cello rock.. guitar rock.. SING-A-LONGS!!! Starfish & Coffee, Stayin’ Alive, Answering Machine, Laid. My favorite sing-a-long was Extreme’s “More Than Words”. Matt was happy/amused/amazed(?) that we sang in tune. And everyone sang along too.. nobody was in the corner eating chips (hee- inside joke for those that know.. sorry.)

OH and another memorable moment — Matt Fish totally rocked Whitesnake on his cello.
Yeah you read that sentence correct. Whitesnake.. on a cello. Matt Fish really knows how to work that powerful vibrating instrument between his legs.
::gasp::
Don’t gasp at me. That’s actually a Matt Nathanson statement.
“So Jen, where’s the photos?”
They are located here. I did the best I could given the lighting situation at Slims and the fact that Matt told everyone to cool it with the camera flashes. (I got 3 flash-photos in before he said that. My camera has a pretty powerful flash, but it’s nothing like some cameras have now. The flicker-flash kind – there were a few girls at the front of the stage with cameras like that. Poot.)
As we were leaving Slims, everyone was out and about near the local clubs/bars. We ended up having to walk past a guy who was peeing against the wall. Quite a way to end the night right?
After Slims, Adam drove us back to San Jose.. we stopped off at La Vic and headed back to the apt. It was an interesting trip back, that’s for sure.
So it’s late and I’m super tired.. so off to sleep I go!
