Many times, while aboard Light Rail in the wee early morn, I am witness to an unfortunate event.
No, not a car crash.
Nope, nobody is hit by light rail either.

No what I am talking about is the frightening realization that you have lost your VTA pass. Sometimes people are faking it. They’re looking around.. “Gee I must have it somewhere…”, searching through their backpacks, purses, and man-bags. I just watch and ‘tsk tsk’ them in my head. Silly people! Don’t over act – they won’t buy it.
Ah but karma often bites the proverbial ass right?
Guess who left her monthly pass at her apartment.
So there I was, one of those people searching like mad through my purse. I checked each spot twice. Shook my notebook several times. Checked the pockets just once more… and looked pitifully at the VTA Officer. At the next stop he asked me to step off of the train.
I’m going to get a ticket – it’s going to be a huge-ass fine. I cannot believe this.
So he asked why I didn’t have a ticket which is when I started to explain that I HAD a ticket. It was just at home. I could describe the ticket in detail – I mean come on man, I knew the color! The color changes each month!
I showed him my July pass that I still had in my purse.
He then asked me when I usually buy my month pass. I told him, “around the first of the month”.
“Then why do you have several day passes?”
…
He noticed, in my searching frenzy, that yes – I had several day pass ticket stubs in my purse. So I explained that sometimes I don’t buy my ticket right away -usually because I have to wait till I am paid.
I was ready to tell this guy my entire life story – ANYTHING to save me from the Big Evil Fine ($250 to be exact).
So he said that it looked like I tried to buy a ticket as often as I could and that this ONE TIME he’d let me go (with a written, documented warning) but that next time if I’m caught I could.. “blah blah legal mumbo jumbo big fine maybe court and a larger fine blah blah have I scared you enough?” Ya know, the stuff they’re supposed to say.
Of course, he had to witness me buying a pass for the remainder of my Light Rail journey (thank gawd I had $1.50 on me) and with that he was on his way.
And since I used my last $1.50 for the three whole Light Rail stops – I had to miss my usual bus and get change from Walgreens… and then catch another bus to work.
So on a day that I left early for work I ended up being almost 30 minutes late. Thank goodness I have very understandable employers.
And my August Monthly Pass? It has a new home – taped to the inside of my wallet.
