Busy day!

Published by Jennifer under photography

Today I attended a wedding of a good friend of mine. I’ve known Amandeep since 2nd grade (back when she’d always wear her hair in a long braid, frilly little dresses, and be a shy as can be!) Now she is a married woman. Her wedding was a traditional Sikh wedding and it was so beautiful. Obviously, I didn’t understand anything that wasn’t in English – and I think the only part in English was when some guy said the ceremony was over and lunch was being served.

Amandeep’s dress was so amazing – deep red and orange with gold sprinkled about. Such a gorgeous bride! See for yourself (and her slightly-in-a-daze new hubby, hehe):

The henna work on her hands is amazing, I love how some of it is dark and there is the lighter shading throughout. I could stare at it forever – and watching someone apply it is just as interesting.

Getting to the wedding was a silly adventure itself. Adam and I thought we were running late and my friend Amber (hi amber!) was already at the temple and had called us. She told us that as she arrived, she saw everyone leave. (This is at 9am, by the way.) She said she talked with a few people and then some guy said the tea/snack part of the shindig was going to happen at “her aunt’s house.” So those confused (Amber and some of Amandeep’s co-workers) followed the guy about 6 miles away from the temple. We just happened to be around the corner when the switch was happening, so we coordinated with Amber and followed her to the spot. We get out of the car and follow other people to a house – but it seems a little odd. Why all of a sudden is the tea thing in a different location? What happens to those that arrive late? Confusion! The co-workers had gone in first and as we started to walk toward the house they began walking back. Laughter began as they informed us it was the WRONG WEDDING.

Oh my!

So we hopped back into our cars and jetted aaaaaaaaalll the way back to the temple – still with ample time to spare.

Clothing.. now when I had talked to my friends about going to this wedding, I kept getting advice on what to/not to wear. I was told to not wear white or black and to be as colorful as I can. Ok so if you know me then you know I’m a fan of dark colors. My clothing doesn’t get toooo bright (I do have a few shirts though.) So I decided to wear a skirt I haven’t worn in over a year (this one) and luckily I recently bought a blue/tealish shirt that matched the skirt. Wee! Not black. Not white. Still moderately dark but colorful! Of course, when we get there, all of Amandeep’s co-workers and college friends were wearing dark colors (mostly black!) Well pfft. Hehe, her neighbor at one point asked a few of the girls “sooo, apparently you didn’t get the memo about ‘colorful’?” teehee! So thank you Iris, Sweta, and Vijay for all of the advice you gave me! Oh and the scarfy thing I bought (at Macy’s with a mystery gift card I had) totally matches with my skirt/shirt. So I looked like I actually planned my outfit/headscarfyness.

Food… we nibbled on some yummies – no idea what it was, veggie yes, but other than that no clue! But the highlight… naan! (Mr. Internet says I spelled that right.. here’s hoping!) Yummy yum yum!

Unfortunately because of a compact weekend, I had to make my visit to Modesto really short which meant only getting to hang out for lunch/dinner with my parents and then a quick visit with my grandpa.

Tonight I finished the cupcakes for my co-worker’s baby shower that we’re throwing tomorrow. Don’t they look cute?!

More later! Must sleep!

Snarfy

Published by Jennifer under meme, penny

First, for those wondering, Penny is doing better today! We took her to the vet early Monday morning and they gave her a shot of fluid. It created a little pouch on her back and she absorbed it throughout the day (helps with any dehydration she was having since she stopped drinking on Sunday.) We came back from work and she was eating and drinking up a storm. We bought her some nasal drops called Little Noses (for babies) and started with that. Today she’s talkative, jumping around, playing – all good signs! She’s still stuffy/sneezy making noises in what I can only describe as “snarfy”. We still have to give her meds three times a day for about another week.

Ok, it’s late, I’m tired, but I’ll play along and do a silly meme.

Q: 4TH PERSON ON YOUR MISSED CALLS:
A: Work

Q: DO YOU CHEW ON YOUR STRAWS?
A: I did when I was little

Q: WHAT IS THE NEXT CONCERT YOU’RE GOING TO?
A: I’d really like to go to Alice’s Now & Zen Fest in SF. The B-52’s, Gnarls Barkley, Blue October, Augustana and Carbon Leaf!

Q: WHAT WORD DO YOU SAY A LOT?
A: “oh poo”

Q: WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU ATE:
A: dinner that contained meats and veggies

Q: WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU SAID TO SOMEONE AND WHO WAS IT?
A: “what are you doing?” – to Adam, he was cleaning the medicine droppers

Q: DO YOU WATCH TV?
A: yup – summer viewing: General Hospital, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (hi-larious), Project Runway

Q: EVER BEEN HUNTING?
A: Nope

Q: IS MARRIAGE IN YOUR FUTURE?
A: Probably

Q: WHAT SHOULD YOU BE DOING RIGHT NOW?
A: Sleeping

Q: DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?
A: Nah, get to know someone first

Q: WHO’S THE YOUNGEST ONE IN THE FAMILY?
A: Me – only child!

Q: IS DRUG FREE THE WAY TO BE?
A: Unless prescribed, yes.

Q: ARE YOU A HEAVY SLEEPER?
A: I’d say no, but Adam’s snoring is so loud some people would probably say yes I do.

Q: LAST TIME YOU USED A SKATEBOARD?
A: Um, I probably stood on one ages ago. I’d break my ass if I tried to use one.

Q: WHERE WAS THE LAST PLACE YOU SLEPT BESIDES YOUR HOUSE?
A: At work – haha just kidding. Like I’d get a moment of sleep there. The real answer is Adam’s car on the way back from Matt’s bbq.

Q: EVER RUN OUT OF GAS ON THE ROAD?
A: Nope!

Q: BEST MOVIE YOU’VE SEEN IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS?
A: Hmm.. have I seen one in the past two weeks? I don’t think I’ve even watched any Netflixed movies. Oh wait, Adam rented Ultraviolet and the Cinematography is nifty in that one. Oh and he rented some Final Fantasy movie (like the one they did awhile back that everyone was like oooh and ahhh over the quality of the animation) – anyway, I only watched the last few minutes of it and part of the credits – then I squeaked and made him rewind a bit. The main character is voiced by a guy from General Hospital! (Steve Burton/Jason) So um. Does that answer the question?

Q: DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WHO COME UP WITH BRAIN DEAD QUIZZES ARE CRYING FOR HELP IN SOME TWISTED WAY?
A: Aren’t we all? Silly question memes are a fun way to kill time and fill a blog post when you have nothing really to post about.

THE LAST PERSON LIST
1. You saw: Adam
2. Talked to on the phone: Adam or someone from work, not sure.
3. Hugged: Adam again!
4. Text: Sent my mom a pic from my cell phone
5. Messaged over myspace: Lonny, answered a bulletin board thingie of his.

FAVORITES
1. Number: 3 i guess
2. Song: I’m fond of Blue October’s “Hate Me”
3. Color: I’m into smokey tones of blues, greens, pink/purples right now
4. Season: Spring or Fall, but the parts when it’s not icky rain.

TRUE/FALSE
I am a morning person: False – more of a night person.
I am a perfectionist: True for the most part, depends what it’s about I guess.
I am an only child: True
I am currently in my pajamas: False, Threadless shirt (pillow fight) and shorts! (OK, so I just went to Threadless to find the direct link for Pillow Fight and I got sucked in and checked out some new shirts they have and ended up ordering 4 new ones! ADDICTED.)
I am currently single: False
I can be paranoid at times: Yup!
I currently regret something that I have done: Not that I can recall
I enjoy texting on the phone: Yeah now that I have my phone with a nifty keyboard, and Verizon. Sprint sucked, you’d activate the message screen and wait for it to load, then you pick the person, wait for it to load, then you type your msg, and wait for it to send.. wait wait wait.. took forever! I didn’t send many text messages back then.

And now that I’ve meme-ed and shopped, I must sleep.

Afraid.. but trying to keep positive.

Published by Jennifer under penny

Penny’s health isn’t improving. Friday afternoon we took her to her first vet appointment. You’re supposed to go a few days after adoption for a free full-exam. Not only were we going for that reason, it was also to check up on her cold. As I mentioned in my first post about her, she has Upper Respiratory Infection. This is not some easy cold for a kitten to get over, and frankly in everything I read the word “fatal” is often used. Kittens and older cats have weaker immune systems.

On Friday Penny started to cough, a new symptom, added to her congestion, drippy nose, and irritated eye. The vet gave us stronger antibiotics and eyedrops and we continued the medication process since then. Saturday she was lively, playing, taking some naps now and then, and eating and drinking her water.

Today she’s more lethargic and I think she’s having trouble smelling her food because her nose is plugged up. We started to feed her by hand and give her water with a syringe (it’s not a needle, but similar to an eyedropper – one that was provided to us by the vet.)

We’ve talked to the vet and she said to bring Penny back in for follow up.

We’re doing everything we’re supposed to and giving her plenty of love as well. I’m completely torn up inside and I can only hope she pulls through this. I’m terribly scared for her, but I’m trying very hard to be positive.

Penny!

Penny

Thanks everyone for your awesome name suggestions – we took most of them into consideration but in the end we went with one of the names that kept resurfacing when we’d wittle the list down. She just fits this name – it’s cute and sweet, just like her.

And for good measure, s’more photos! These were pretty difficult to take because she doesn’t realllly seem to like my camera (the girl will have to get used to it!)

Bonding with the Kitty

Published by Jennifer under penny

No, she’s still not named. We better name her soon or she’s going to think her name is Baby or Good Girl.

It was incredibly hard to stay focused at work today when all I could think about is our kitten home alone, sneezing and being lonely. Thankfully Adam decided to have his lunch at the apt and check up on kitty.

So today when we came home it was KITTY TIME! The “schedule” so far is to play with her a bit, change/check on her water/food/potty and then it’s meds time. Being the 3rd time we’ve had to give it to her, she seemed more willing, but still a slight pissed off with us after. So we play with her a bit more, then we leave to go have our dinner.

Alright so bonding time is after dinner. She’s a bit sleepy so we just let her walk around and do whatever, pet her, talk to her. So she’ll start to climb into my lap and do a little bit of kneading on my legs (it’s best to wear long jeans or a towel over my legs if I’m in shorts – otherwise, YOWSA-claws!) Then I pick her up, and she does the CUTEST thing (you guys are going to get sick of my sap, I swear I’ll balance my posts out!) – she sleeps on my shoulder like a little baby. She perches herself on top, wiggling her face as close to mine or to into the curve of my neck as her legs are sprawled out. At this point she’s already purring like a machine but then she falls asleep. I tell ya, I just melt when she does that.

We adopted!

Published by Jennifer under penny

kitty!

Isn’t she ADORABLE?!

So the story of the PreciousKittyToBeNamed has started out a tiny bit rocky. We went to adopt on Friday night thinking that we’d actually be able to take her home that day.

A few days before we did our research on the Humane Society’s website and picked out a few kittens from their roster online. Friday we went to the shelter and found out there were a lot more kittens there than they had online. I think I was in shock, I didn’t know what to do. They tell you to be there 15 mins before your appointment so you can look around. 15 minutes is NOT ENOUGH. There were like 4 separate areas they keep kittens.

So we’re looking at the kittens and we spot some names on our list, but we haven’t seen the first on our list yet. So time is up and we start our interview and she checks our list and we decide to go and find the first one on it. Off we go on our kitty finding mission!

When we finally find her, the volunteer takes her out of the cage and hands her to me.

Instantly, I go full-female and start cooing and making cutsie noises. The kitty sits on my chest, calmly and looks up at me. Oh man.. the eyes.. that’s it. Oh and Adam pets her and you know, has his say and all (riiight..haha) and we decide that yes this is the kitty we must have.

So later during our interview we find out that she needs to get spayed and we won’t be getting her until Monday or Tuesday. They said they’ll call us and we’ll schedule a pick up time. If we do not make the time, they will put the cat back up for adoption! Gah!

Monday came and went, still no kitty call.
Tuesday was almost over when Adam called me at work to say that the kitty had developed an upper respiratory infection (very common, as it is spread from cat to cat and being in a shelter ups those chances considerably.) We were instructed to take her home and give her meds for 7-10 days (3 different kinds, two mouth-droppy kinds and 1 eyedrop kind.)

After she gets well, we take her back to get spayed. Man, is she going to love us or what?

Well, we love her!

We still need to name her though. We have a list and we’re going through it and trying to come up with new ones. Ones that fit her personality, sound cute, all that good stuff.

Despite her cold, she’s a playful and loving kitten.

YAY! I have a kitty!

Ok Go!

Published by Jennifer under music, video

Good music and a fun little video!

I like the “skating” movement.

Here’s another video(A Million Ways to be Cruel) by OK Go.
Then here are two videos of random people (students, groups of friends) performing the same dance on their own. Too much fun!

Ssssss-songs

Published by Jennifer under mattnathanson

Random meme time!

This is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with ten song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I’ll give you a letter. You wanna play? You know the drill…

Amy gave me the letter “S” and because it’s late and there is no hope for me to remember random songs, I am going to just go through my iPod to find songs.

1. Sad Songs – Matt Nathanson; “I’m so tired of singing sad songs in my head” – I often have this song stuck in my head, and despite the lyrics, I never tire of hearing it in my head. ;)

2. Saturday in the Park – Chicago; CHICAGO! Love them! Saw them in concert! Just good, fun music. One of my favorites by Chicago.

3. Sick and Beautiful – Artificial Joy Club; An oldie from “Jennifer’s Obsession with Canadian Music” days. I’d blare this in the dorms when I was being moody. It’s too bad the band broke up in ‘99.

4. Silver – Moist; Heheehehee.. another great song from a great Canadian band, another band that is no more. Oh man, just listening to it makes me wanna bust out my Moist albums. This song (as others on the various albums) make me think of the days I’d chat with my buddies on IRC; often having long chats with Jenn about what new artist I should listen to next.

5. Sleepy Maggie – Mary Jane Lamond & Ashley MacIsaac (!!!) Ok THIS one brings me back. The mp3 I have is not the highest quality, but who cares! First off the chick rattles off a bunch of words in Gaelic. I have no idea what she says, then you’ve got Ashley rocking out on the fiddle. It’s got an awesome beat and makes you want to get up and dance a jig. Love it!

6. So Right – Dave Matthews Band; The beginning of this song reminds me of the concert I went to a few years back with Marc, Matt and some friend of theirs. This seems like it’d be a good song to introduce DMB to someone. Good beat, you can make out what Dave is saying ;) , and it doesn’t involve hiking up any skirts. Any love I have for DMB now is because of the combined influences from my friends Amy and Marc. Thanks guys! DMB music is music that makes me happy.

*Secret number 6.5* Going through my songs on my iPod, I come across tracks from comedy albums – so for 6.5 I’m going to put “Somebody shit on the coats” by Dane Cook – cause it’s a hilarious joke. K, back to the previously scheduled programming…

7. Something’s Coming – West Side Story; LOVE West Side Story – this is one of my favorite songs from the musical. If you don’t smile while listening to this song, or perhaps even start singing along – then.. then.. you’re a ROBOT!

8. Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Eva Cassidy; A beautiful version of the classic song. I think I prefer this version to the original. The acoustic guitar solo is great.

9. Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole; Another beautiful version of the song. I can’t decide which one I like more. They’re both just so great!

10. Starfish & Coffee – Prince / Matt Nathanson; Prince’s version is nice, but when you’re at a Matt Nathanson show and he gets the audience going on this song – it’s a BLAST. “starfish and coffee, maple syrup and jam, butterscotch clouds and tangerines and a side order of ham, if you set your mind free baby, maybe you’ll understand…”

I’m not through all my songs, but I’m done.

Honorary mentions:
Starlight – Superman Lovers (the potato and rat!)
Stayin’ Alive – The Bee Gees
Stuck in the 90’s – Moxy Fruvous (”Buy a new Gameboooooyy!!”)
Sundown – Elwood (”Turn potato – turn potato – hey B what’s the deal?”)

and more.. and more.. and more…
