Jump Style

Published by Jennifer under video

So I’m watching my TiVo-ed episode of So You Think You Can Dance and this guy (Gold Inferno) in some weird gold wrestler mask performs for the judges. His song has a good beat and all he does is jumps around to the beat. Specific jumps, but jumping around.

The judges giggle, I giggle.. I mean seriously, jumping around?

The guy explains that it is called Jump Style, a dance style born in Belgium. He and a friend found some videos online and fell in love with the dance.

OK wait a minute.. videos online? Yay for YouTube! Now, I am not in love with this dance style, by no means, but hey some of these videos are kind of cool.

You know how when you see some kid kicking ass on Dance Dance Revolution, and you just stop and stare while s/he bounces around? Well here’s a video to stare at.

You learn something new everyday…

100 Movies…

Published by Jennifer under video

100 Movies, 100 Quotes, 100 Numbers
This movie was created as a parody of the 100 lists that the AFI puts out. It’s quite an interesting little video. Fun to see favorite movies pop up now and then.

Woo #40! and Yay #8!

Anti-War Songs?

Published by Jennifer under music

While watching American Idol, which actually I’m still watching while I type this.. my local news station had a teaser for tonight’s news. A simple black screen with scrolling white text with “Give Peace a Chance” playing in the the background. The text says:

In the 60s, Anti-war songs reflected how Americans felt about the Vietnam war.

60% of Americans today think invading Iraq was a mistake.

So where are “our” anti-war anthems?

KTVU 2 News Uncovers why you aren’t hearing the musical voices of today sing out against Iraq.

This is actually a topic that came up between my mother and I a few weeks ago. Where IS the music?

Theories..
Look at how the Dixie Chicks were attacked when they voiced opinions — those of which are echoed by a great percentage of Americans.

Money. Don’t pick a side because you’ll alienate a portion of potential sales. Disgusting, yup.

Maybe it’s something to do with the “Support your Troops” sentiment. So many people get pushed out of shape when you say you don’t support the war. They think it means you don’t support those having to be out there and put their lives on the line.

Sure there are a few out there still creating songs with opinions. One of my favorites is “Dear Mr President” by Pink. It is an awesome song. Not necessarily an anti-war song, but clearly asks questions that should be asked. I read a post awhile back about how Jimmy Kimmel was the only TV show host that let her sing that song. Which is kind of funny because Jimmy is on ABC and ABC is owned by Disney, and well Disney… hmm. Anyway.

I don’t normally watch news programs on any FOX stations, but I will just to see this special.

More later. In the meantime, what do you think?

**Update: “What’s changed?”
- no draft, less of a direct issue
- most young people listened to the same music back in the 60s, now there are so many genres
- no surge of pro-government sentiment (post 9/11)
- lots of music available on the internet, punk, rap, etc that voice anti-war sentiments, but because they’re not popular mainstream ‘love songs’.. they don’t get radio play.
- Neil Young’s song gets web-play but not radio.
- American Idiot by Green Day, probably most popular song

I has a laptop!*

Published by Jennifer under geekery, me, penny

I am typing this post from a spanky new Macbook Pro. I’ve been wanting one for some time and I couldn’t stand it anymore… it was time to get one.

It was ordered last Sunday and arrived on Thursday. Naturally, I took photos of this special occasion.

heaven in a box
After I tore through the mailing box and opened the laptop box I froze. Never before had I seen such lovely packaging. Look at that spiffy design!

"um, what's that you got over there?"
Penny sniffed around and became a bit curious as to what was sucking all the attention away from her.

aw, cue sappy music here

So ever since I got it I haven’t put it down much. I’ve allowed myself to sleep and shower, but really I seem to always find another reason to pop this sucker open. For example, today, I just spent a good 3 or 4 hours working on various tasks (organizing my files, copying over my music, gathering design pieces.. you know important stuff.) 11pm rolled around and I figured I’d be a good girl and go to sleep. I get to the bed then I remembered there was something I wanted to do! Baaack to the computer. And now, I sit in bed and finish the post I started this morning.

*ala lolcats see this guy as an example

A Day to Celebrate

Published by Jennifer under nifty, web

Rejoice! For today is special:

International Respect for Chickens Day
The United Poultry Concerns website suggests you do something for chicken today, because “chicken are people too!”

You could
:: “Get on a radio talk show” — Though please, in the words of Cibo Motto, please “Know Your Chicken” (which btw, that song is fun, their album is weird, but… anyway)

:: “Have a table at your local mall” — yeah, I’d like a table outside of Nordstrom, and I’ll be bringing 5 live chickens, uncaged and unleashed, for demonstration. Yeeah.

:: “Show Chicken Run” — you know, I didn’t like that one much. So no, don’t watch it. It might make you hungry.

I was going to post a photo of chicken, but I realized all I had was a photo of Shanta about to attack a plate of chicken wings and a cellphone pic of a Santa Fe Chicken Salad from Applebees. Which.. sounds really good right now.

YAY FOR CHICKENS!

…or if you don’t feel like celebrating chicken… today is also:

No Pants Day!

From wiki, “When large groups of people parade around in public without their pants, amazing things are bound to happen. At the very least, you’ll take your drab, wretched life a little less seriously, at least for one day.”

Gee, if Flickr had 24 Hours of Flickr today instead of tomorrow — that photo book would have a whole new look.
