Shake, Rattle and Roll!

Published by Jennifer under memories, san jose

5.6!!
Centered in Alum Rock.. a mere 12 minutes away from where we live.

Boy that was fun! First there was some rumbling, which we’re kind of used to since the San Jose airport is so close (some planes are noisy suckers.) Then more rumbling and now shaking – items are hitting each other and making noise. Penny starts to freak out. Hell, I’m starting to think “um, is it going to get worse?” Then a few strong jerks back and forth – EXCITING!! The second the shaking stopped I called my mom (timestamp 8:05!) who was in Modesto. While it was ringing Adam and I shared our excitement that the ground was still rolling around.

I’m such a nut for earthquakes – so you’ll just have to pardon my excitement OK?

:: Official D A M A G E Report ::

1. Box of Pasta fell over. (gasp)
2. Two small frames, face down (the HORROR!)
3. First batch of cupcakes were smooshed. (Time to sue Mr Earthquake!)

Damaged

So while I’ve been baking and prepping new batches of cupcakes I’ve had the TV on KRON 4. The only station that seems to think we need hours and hours of pictures of frames fallen over, books on the ground, shampoo bottles littering grocery aisles. Oh hell, I’ve been watching it so I guess I can’t make too much fun right?

“This is a bobble-head that cracked.. you can see the part of the face of the bobble-head right there on the desk.. AMAZING” – actual quote from Michelle Kennedy of KRON 4.

Man and they say we freak out when it rains.

[10/31: Of about 28 aftershocks - just felt the 3.7 at work.]

Old Man

Published by Jennifer under family, music

No, this post isn’t about my dad (heee!!! I kid, I kid!)

It’s about Neil Young’s song, Old Man.

So a few times throughout the years my mom would tell me a story about my Grandpa’s uncle, Louie. Louie was a caretaker for a ranch in California way back when. He and his wife lived on that ranch – a ranch owned by singer Neil Young. She recalled the day when she was 16 and went for a visit with the rest of the family.

That day, after rehearsing, Neil Young and Steven Stills came up to Louie’s house (on the property) and met my mom and family.

One awesome factoid – the song “Old Man” was written about Uncle Louie. And once again, YouTube is awesome. Here’s a video of Neil Young singing “Old Man” – the man at the beginning of the video is Uncle Louie.

If you go to the YouTube video page, read the comments by NikonSandy – as there are a few details of the story I didn’t mention.
