Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog

Published by Jennifer under music, television, video, web

So I finally got around to watch this awesome web-tv show/movie -ish deal created by Joss Whedon. Everyone was talking about it on the web and I wanted proper time to devote to it. Man.. Joss (and family) are amazing.

I downloaded (purchased) all 3 acts off of iTunes, but thanks to hulu, the whole show is available to watch. (With some sponsor bits shoved in between.)

It’s hilarious and will have you humming the songs later. Here you go, 45 minutes of Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day.

BlogHer: Community Keynote

Published by Jennifer under geekery, web

One of the best moments during BlogHer was the Community Keynote moderated by Eden Kennedy of Fussy. Weeks before BlogHer, members of the BlogHer community voted on the best blog posts in a variety of categories. The winners then read their posts during the Community Keynote. If you didn’t laugh or cry, you were a robot. While there were a handful of emotional posts, two specifically made me cry. It never ceases to amaze me how much women have turned to the internet to share their most treasured, most kept feelings and secrets. And in turn, the community embraces them.

Here’s the list:

Best Rant

Sarah Brown: “Attention: I have some things to say about Goldfish snack crackers.”

Danielle Wiley: “I am indeed a full-time mother, and yes, my daughter does watch Hannah Montana”

Megan Smith: “Michelle Obama Enjoys “The View:” A Recap”

Mr. Lady: “It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden stop.”

Heather Barmore: “Guess who wants Typepad for Mother’s Day”

Blogging About Blogging

Liz Gumbinner: “I’m official! Hooray!”

Suebob Davis: “Blogging makes you lose your mind”

Stephanie Bergman: “Has Twitter Ruined Blogging?”

Zan: “Note to Self in the Age of the Internet: A Necessary Reminder”

Parenting

Casey: “The one about the overdose.”

Doug: “Five going on fifteen”

Polly Pagenhart: “Thanks giving”

Lindsay Ferrier: “Every Mom Needs a Little Wiggle Room”

Letter to My Body

Yvonne: “Life Changing Words”

Schmutzie: “#744: I Nudged Him Hard, Saying: “Come, Gloopy Bastard, As Thou Art”"

Jen Zug: “He should really teach all young men everywhere how to extract the truth from tired, chubby, stay at home moms”

Laurie White: “Letter to My Body, Letter to My Face”

Humor

Antonia Cornwell: “Christmas Poem”

Jenny Lawson: “High”

Evany Thomas: “Say my name!”

Deb: “Too much of a good thing?”

Angela: “The albatross and the whales, they are my brothers.”

BlogHer

Published by Jennifer under geekery, web

I’ve had an incredible day. Really, seriously.

I woke up at a fairly normal time and made my way to the BlogHer welcome session. I scoped the room and saw a table with some open chairs and decided that was the table I’d approach and sit down. I sat next to Grace, a concert pianist and after chatting a bit and finding out we were planning to attend the same sessions – we’d pretty much determined we were BlogHer buddies.

After the Welcome/Intro session we were off to the first session: Who We Are: Introversion, Blogging and BlogHer. While there was some highlights of this session, overall it may not have served the purpose I was going for. Honestly, one of the issues I have with my blog is that I’m not as open as I’d like to be. Perhaps, it’s because I’m not sure how people would react to what I have to say, or maybe it’s as mundane as.. well.. me saying something mundane! Anyway, there were some good points and tips the women presenting the session had, but, perhaps because I’m thinking more in business terms — it could have been prepared a bit more.

After lunch and meeting more people (omg I’ve handed out more cards than I thought I would! Hi everybody!) We were off to the session- What We Do: DIY Content Syndications and Promotion – advertising! Woo hoo! So the presenters talked about a buuuunch of useful sites – both personally useful and perhaps useful for where I work. That’s great.. toward the end of it, people kept focusing on Twitter.

I must say, for the last month- month and a half, all the people “in the know” and the people who merely just repeat the others… have been saying that because Twitter has been having issues (fail whale) that it’s dead and other services (Plurk, FriendFeed) are thenextbestthing— pfft. Pfft I say. Actually from every person I’ve talked to, well almost every single person has something positive to say about Twitter. And that’s how I’ve felt all along. Twitter is a really powerful tool, and like most sites, needs tweaking. So it goes down. Flickr went down a lot when it’s new.. and we have all survived. We still know how it can be useful. So… anyway..

Really, next year, BlogHer peeps — do an entire session on Twitter and/or other popular services.

After a bit of a break – where I checked out half of my swag-bag, cleaned off my memory cards and posted to Flickr.  I was off to my last session of the day: The BlogHer Community Keynote.

During this keynote – BlogHer community members had been voted to read special/popular stories they posted on the BlogHer site. Many were hilarious – for example, one woman from London (complete with her awesome accent) read a poem ala Night Before Christmas, about a fart. Hilarious! Another woman, on the other side of the spectrum. Read a post she wrote about personal issues she dealt with. She was so moving, she had me crying by the end of her speech and everyone gave her a standing ovation after her reading.

What amazes me– no, what makes me proud — is how open everyone is. No matter what you’re telling people, from the silly to the serious — everyone in the audience is supportive. It’s an amazing group and really makes me proud to be a part of it.
